We've kept this short, because a privacy policy nobody reads protects nobody.
The whole thing in one line: we don't sell your data, we don't share it, we don't feed it to AI companies, and we'll delete it the moment you ask.
We're Huw and Kat, a couple in the UK. We're building ChapterMatch because we got tired of being recommended the same bestsellers over and over, and we believe everyone has a book worth staying up late for. No megacorp behind us, no investors, no advertisers, nobody with their own reasons for wanting your data. Just the two of us. Good recommendations come from knowing which books tend to be loved by readers with similar taste. The big sites already have that. We don't, and we can't go and take it: Goodreads closed its public API years ago and its terms don't allow scraping the site. We wouldn't want to work that way anyway.
So we ask. If you send us your reading history, you're choosing to, and you can change your mind whenever you like.
If you joined the mailing list: your email address, so we can tell you when we open. Every email we send has an unsubscribe link that takes you off the list for good.
If you sent us your reading history: the file itself (your books, ratings, dates and shelves) and the address you sent it from, so we can write back and so we can find your file again if you ask us to delete it.
Maths. Your star ratings do the work. We find the readers whose taste lines up with yours, then show you the books they rated highly that you haven’t read yet. No chatbot writes your recommendations, and nothing you send is ever used to train one.
Email us and we'll delete your file and everything we worked out from it. No form to fill in, no reason needed, no attempt to talk you out of it. You can also ask us for a copy of what we hold, or to correct it. We'll get to it within a few days.
Data protection in the UK is overseen by the Information Commissioner's Office, so if something ever goes badly wrong there's a proper backstop. We'd rather you let us know first and gave us the chance to put things right.
